PUBLICATIONS
We have several publications covering Great Milton village history. These are available from the History Society in person or by post.
A Brief Guide to Great Milton – £2.00
This essential read for any Great Milton resident provides a summary of the origins of the village. First published (in fact it was our first) in the 1960s, there may be some inaccuracies but the main facts remain unchanged and are well worth studying.
Tales of Great Milton – £2.00
The ''Tales' has proved to be a great favourite. The short stories - each contributed by a different person - have been very popular, and it provides a neat overview of our Village. There is plenty of scope for a follow up booklet!
Great Milton's Great War – £2.00
This a very special booklet to mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the Great War. Desperately sad stories of those we lost, and relief and happiness for those who came home. Copies have been sent all over the world, to relatives and friends of Great Milton's men who went to war. The beautiful Roll of Honour on the cover is a perfect tribute.
Bells Boilers and Beef – £2.00
This title was chosen as representing recurring themes as reported in the Monthly Military Magazine. In those days 1860's - 1870's, the vicar wrote the content and this reflected the current problems and irritants which he encountered. The attitudes of those in the big houses with power, to those without is shocking. Some things are better now, at least on the surface.
Tales from a Sporting Village – £3.50
A detailed and comprehensive history of the very many sporting activities in our village over many Years with familiar faces in their early Years.
Illustrated with many photographs and stories from the past.
Great Milton in the Civil War – £2.00
A well written and illustrated booklet. Extensive research by a former member went into the writing.
My Childhod in Jersey and Nazi Germany – £2.00
This short memoir by one of our volunteers is a recollection of life under occupation for 2 years followed by deportation to Germany. This lasted for 2 1/2 years, and with virtually no education or any fresh food, had a lasting effect.
Originally written to place the facts before family and friends, it is now sold to benefit the funds of Great Milton History.
1967 Blakeston Survey – £7.50
This is a comprehensive study of the village in 1967 by the local Headmaster. It is an excellent handbook for new residents and also a good reference book for us all.
